Hieronymus Bosch was an Early Netherlandish painter. His work is known for its use of fantastic imagery to illustrate moral and religious concepts and narratives.
His paintings on wood panels using the traditional tempera technique are often thought to be the ancestors of modern surrealism (1924-1940s) and DADA. Though these pieces served to illustrate religious doctrines, there is an abundance of sarcasm and irony contained in these ridiculous images viewed from the modern eye.
