Egon Schiele is a protégé of Gustav Klimt and thus heavily influenced by its symbolist mentor. Schiele was a major figurative painter of the early 20th century. His work is noted for its intensity, and the many self-portraits the artist produced.
Schiele's paintings focus on distorted human figures, often combined with dead branches and birds. His brush strokes are distinctively anguished, his use of colors arbitrary and pale, his comprehension of human body totally morbid yet powerful. His works characterized his as a pioneer of the 20th-century expressionism.
